Money

We are going to look at the number of coins in various amounts of Pounds, Euros and Dollars. (Dollars have a 25c coin called a quarter)

  • Coins £ [1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2]
  • Coins € [1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, €1, €2, €5]

Example

You want to pay for a pint of milk costing 85p which coins will you offer? If you only have £1 what coins will you get in your change?

There are lots of answers 50p+ 20p + 10p + 5p = 85p,
or 4 x 20p +5p = 85p, or 50p + 3 x10p + 2x 2p + 1p = 85p.
these are only 3 of the possibilities.

It is often easier to hand over £1 coin and collect the change (100 – 85 = )15p but you could still get a large number of combinations. e.g. 15 x1p or 7 x 2p +1p or most easily 10p + 5p.

If you are not familiar with the coins it is easy to be cheated.
