Logarithms

Logarithms (logs) are to do with powers.

The rule is

If           N = a^x

Then      x = log_a N

Example 1

log₂(8) = 3  means the power to which 2 must be raised to get 8

(because 2³ = 8)

Example 2

log₄(16) = 2  means the power to which 4 must be raised to get 16

(because 4² = 16)

Example 3

log₃(27) = 3  means the power to which 3 must be raised to get 27

(because 3³ = 27)
