Solving Equations

To solve an equation we need to find the value of the 'unknown' e.g. x, y, a, b etc...

Worked example

Solve x + 4 = 11

We need to get x on its own on one side of the equation  (to do this we must 'get rid of' the +4).

Take 4 from both sides:

x + 4 - 4 = 11 - 4

So x = 7
