Averages
Look at the following numbers:
2, 5, 6, 5, 5, 8, 9, 8, 5, 3
There are 3 different types of average.
The mean is found by adding all of the numbers together and then dividing by the number of numbers.
In this case the number of numbers is 10.
So the mean would be:
2 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 8 + 9 + 8 + 5 + 3
= 5.6
10
The median is found by arranging all of the numbers in order and choosing the middle one (in the case of an even number of values take the mean of the 2 middle values).
In this case the median is 5
The mode is the most common value.
In this case the mode is 5
