Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions

Worked example

Change 1 ¾ into an improper fraction.

Think of 1 ¾ cakes...

It is the same as 7/4.

The rule is:

  • Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
  • Add on the numerator - this gives the new numerator.
  • The denominator is always the same.
