Why should you read journals?

As part of your studies you will be expected to read journals because:

  • Journals contain articles, book reviews and editorial content written by subject experts, researchers or practitioners
  • They are often the most up-to-date source of information on your topic and may sometimes be the only source
  • Journal articles tend to be where researchers and academics first report their ideas and findings and may contain in-depth research which may never be published in a book
  • They have an understandable structure - abstract, introduction, methodology, discussion and conclusion
  • Some journals contain articles covering a variety of topics within your subject area

A journal can be published by an academic publisher, professional society or university press.
