Referencing and avoiding plagiarism

At the end of this guide you will have learnt about:

  • What plagiarism is and why it is an important issue in further and higher education.
  • What it is to reference and why it is important to reference the different sources you use in your work.
  • What types of information you need to include when compiling references for your assignments. Please note that the formatting of your references will vary when you use different referencing styles.
  • How to create references, or end-text citations, for different sources such as books and journal articles. The examples used in this guide follow the Northumbria adaptation of the Harvard referencing style (as in the book Cite them right).
