Referencing online reports (Government department)

There are many different types of reports for example: research reports, technical reports, marketing reports, company annual reports, financial reports. These may have been written or produced either by individuals or by professional bodies or organisations. Some reports are published by the Government, for example Command Papers (Green and White) or by Government departments such Department for Buiness Innovation and Skills, Department for Culture Media and Sport etc. but they will all have a similar referencing layout:

  • Who has written the report (including name of the Country if a government department) where relevant
  • When it was published
  • Title of the report
  • Where it was published (Place and name of publisher)
  • Paper or Bill number

You should also remember that if you have accessed an online version you will need to indicate this in the same way as you would for an eBook or eJournal replacing the publisher details with the URL where you accessed the report.

This information may not always be cited in the same way so check your referencing style manuals or guidelines to find out more.
