Electronic journals and Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs)

Sometimes when accessing journal articles you may notice that they have been allocated a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). This DOI is a unique reference number and is a permanent way of keeping track of items on the web. It remains the same even if the publishers change the name of the journal or amends its website.

If your journal article has a DOI then the reference would include the DOI reference instead of the the URL of the provider. Here is an example of an eJournal article reference, with a Digial Object Identifier (DOI), in the Harvard style:

Muscanell, N.L. and Guadagno, R.E. (2011) 'Make new friends or keep the old: gender and personality differences in social networking use', Computers in Human Behaviour, 49(1), pp. 107-112. [Online]. doi: 10.1016/j.chb.2011.08.16 (Accessed: 5 January 2012).

If you wish to find and access the above mentioned article, using its DOI, you should be aware that when entering the URL into your web browser you should start with http://www.dx.doi.iorg/ followed by the DOI number as follows: http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.1016/j.chb.2011.08.016
