Referencing eBooks

We have looked at how you would reference a book and a chapter from an edited book in the Harvard style but what would you do if you needed to refer to a book that you had accesssed electronically, how would this be referenced?.

As well as the Who - Author(s), When - (Year of Publication) and the What - Title: subtitle (and edition if required) you also need to include the Where.

In this part of the reference you would usually give details of the publisher but when referencing an electronic book (eBook) this information is replaced with details of how and where you accessed the eBook:

Name of the eBook collection (in italics)
followed by the phrase [Online] then
Available at: URL
followed by the date you accessed the book (Accessed: date).

So the full reference in the Harvard style would look like:

Crème, P. and Lea, M.P. (2008) Writing at University: a guide for students. 3rd edn. Dawsonera [Online]. Available at: http://www.dawsonera.com/ (Accessed: 3 January 2012).

Once again it should be noted that the format of your references will be different when using other referencing styles. For more information on how to reference eBooks please read the appropriate section of your chosen referencing stlye manual. Alternatively you should consult your academic staff or school referencing guidelines.
